This richly colored and textured canvas is an excellent example of Sam Gilliam's experimental, color field painting in the early 1970s. The artist began to move from the stained paintings of the late 1960s and early 1970s to the collaged paintings of mid-1970s with the introduction of rich textures. Rubiyat has a built-up surface of both finely raised and almost sculptural areas of paint with flocking the addition of small textile fibers into the acrylic paint. These early 1970s beveled edges paintings show Gilliam's addition of paint surfaces that he added to his stained canvas - the verso reveals a brightly colored stained canvas.
