SAMUEL J. BROWN (1907-1994)
Little Girl.

Woodcut on thin Japan paper, 1935. 250x200 mm; 9 7/8x7 7/8 inches, wide (full ?) margins. Signed, dated, numbered 45/45 and inscribed "Imp" in pencil, lower margin. A very good, dark impression of this very scarce print.

Provenance: James A. Porter; hence by descent to his daughter, Constance Porter-Uzelac.

This is only the second known print by this artist to come to auction; the first sold at Swann Galleries on February 28, 2002.

Samuel Joseph Brown was born in Wilmington, NC. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, and taught in Philadelphia public schools for 35 years. He participated in the WPA from 1933-44, and his work was praised by Eleanor Roosevelt. He also made color screenprints for the One World project, to show the harmony which could exist in integrated schools.
