Formed in 1872 to operate a service between Le Havre and Brazil, Compagnie des Chargeurs Réunis began routes to Indochina (a federation of French colonies including modern day Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) in the early 1900s. Service continued until World War II, when the loss of French Indochina gradually forced the company to end passenger services. Throughout his career as a "ship portraitist," Sandy Hook designed posters for 28 shipping and shipbuilding companies. The Guichen sailed for Chargeurs Réunis beginning in 1921. In 1925, the company changed her name and she sailed as the Cap St. Jacques.
