SINIBALDO SCORZA
(Voltaggio 1589-1631 Genoa)
Animals Fighting in the Wilderness.

Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper. 190x303 mm; 7 3/4x12 1/8 inches.

Scorza was born into a wealthy aristocratic family from Voltaggio (now part of Piedmont); his father was the Conte Scorza di Voltaggio. He trained in Genoa and in 1619 became the court painter to Duke Carlo Emanuele I of Savoy. When war broke out between Genoa and Savoy in 1625, he returned to Genoa disgraced and was charged with treason. During his last years, Scorza influenced Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione (1609-1664) and other younger Genoese artists. Scorza is best known for paintings in which animals are part of the narrative, which were in turn influenced by the many northern European artists working in Genoa, notably Frans Snyders and his pupil Jan Roos, as well as Pieter Boel and Goffredo Wals.
