Tesla celebrated his 79th birthday 8 days prior to writing this note. At the party, held in the Hotel New Yorker with a group of guests including over 20 newspaper reporters, Tesla announced a number of incredible discoveries: that the particles of the "cosmic ray" travel up to 500 times faster than light; that his new vibration apparatus could detect gold and coal deep in the earth; that his "oscillating machine" could destroy the Empire State Building using only five pounds of air pressure; and other staggering claims.
