THÉOPHILE-ALEXANDRE STEINLEN (1859-1923) LE JOURNAL / LA TRAITE DES BLANCHES. 1899.
61 1/2x48 1/2 inches. Charle Verneau, Paris.
Condition B: restored losses, repaired tears and restoration in margins and along vertical and horizontal folds.
Offended at the realistic treatment of this already electric subject, the French Prefecture of Police censored the image and refused to let the poster be posted around Paris, an ironic reaction to an image that was supposed to make a point and garner attention. Steinlen was obliged to go back to the printer and add a deshabille to the scandalous nudity. Both versions of the poster also appear with an extra text banner at the top advertising Le Journal as the magazine where the serialization of this novel could be found. Crauzat no. 503, Bargiel & Zagrodski p. 58, DFP-II 793, Gold 90.
