Additional Details

This cartoon was accompanied by the following evaluation from the editor: "This is perhaps the best cartoon Mr. McCay ever made, which is saying a great deal. It teaches a lesson we all need, and the lesson is all in the picture. A good cartoon needs no editor. Show this to the young man who tells you how much better he is than somebody else. Show it to your inner consciousness, if you are inclined, like others, to gloat over those they think inferior, instead of earnestly following and studying their superiors. The average man is as foolish as one climbing a hill backward, merely for the pleasure of looking down. The right kind of climbing is done with eyes fixed on the TOP. Old Death, the humorist, waiting for us at the end of the road, with the hole all neatly dug, grins as we come toward him walking backward."
