[COVENS & MORTIER, OTTENS, or de FER.] Carte de la Nouvelle France, ou se voit cours des Grandes Rivieres de S.Laurens & de Mississipi. Double-page engraved map of the present-day eastern United States, after the important de Fer wall map of 1718. 520x610 mm, wide margins except at bottom edge where at platemark, blank verso; glorious original hand-color in full. A handsome example. [Probably Amsterdam, circa 1719 or circa 1740]

Additional Details

This anonymous map has been attributed varyingly to Ottens or de Fer by Kershaw (336 & 337) and Verner & Stubbs (page 53); see Koeman II page 76 for an association with Covens & Mortier. The present example is the state without the inset view and map of Quebec and without several other decorative elements throughout. Although this presentation has typically been understood to be a later issue of the map (with the aforementioned elements deleted form the plate), there is little evidence in support of that conclusion. This map's very dark impression and fine text guidelines suggest that it is an early pull from the plate and that the missing elements had simply not yet been added.
