ÉDOUARD MANET
Le Torero Mort.

Etching and aquatint on Japan paper, 1867-68. 156x224 mm; 6 1/4x8 7/8 inches, full margins. Seventh state (of 7). Edition of approximately only 50. Published by Cadart, Paris. From Édouard Manet: Eaux-fortes. Ex-collection Henri M. Petiet (Lugt 5031, verso). A brilliant, dark, lifetime impression, extremely scarce in this issue.

Manet (1832-1883) derived this etching from his same-titled oil painting from 1864, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (he had divided an earlier canvas to isolate the toreador, the other part of the canvas is now in The Frick Collection, New York). Guérin 33; Harris 55.
