Usually found as two volumes in one, the work was also issued as two separate volumes on a higher quality paper. The author traveled throughout the South and the Midwest, including the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama and up the Mississippi to St. Louis and also visited Jefferson at Monticello and Robert Owen at New Harmony. The maps include a large folding map of virtually the entire U.S. (with Texas identified) and maps of New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Ohio and others.<
