Drypoint on antique cream laid paper, 1879-82. 235x152 mm; 9¼x6⅛ inches, full margins. A brilliant, early proof impression with richly-inked burr, warm plate tone, and crisp, inky plate edges.
This is the only pure drypoint in Manet's (1832-1883) printed oeuvre and one of his last prints. For the subject, he returned to a painting from 1866, now in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (he also made an etching based on this painting around 1866-67). Guérin 48; Harris 49.
