First edition in the Americas. A biography of the first Emperor of Haiti, Jean-Jacques Dessalines (1758-1806), illustrated with portraits of Dessalines and other key revolutionary figures such as Toussaint L'Ouverture, as well as three scenes of the revolution featuring dismemberment and burning houses. This anonymous work is sometimes attributed to J.F. Dubroca. It was first published in Paris in 1804 as "La Vie de J.J. Dessalines" with only one plate; and then in Madrid in 1805. The Spanish translation is credited to "D.M.G.C." Medina, Mexican Imprints 9860; Palau 363023n (calls this the most esteemed edition); Sabin 99452.
