Additional Details

This playbill dates from Booth's first visit to Boston, just as his theatrical career was reaching its peak. He made his debut on May 12 at the Boston Museum, then the preeminent theater in the city. Two days after his debut, this playbill promises that "in the evening, Mr J. Wilkes Booth . . . will appear as Charles de Moor, in Schiller's Grand Play, The Robbers!" He starred as the disgraced son of a count who took leadership of a band of robbers, killed his lover, and then faced justice. Less than three years later, he assassinated Abraham Lincoln.
