Additional Details

The second page includes largely scornful commentary on Lincoln's senate campaign, contrasting his "northern face" (abolitionist rhetoric) with his "southern face" (alleged racist comments he made in Charleston, which we cannot verify). They proclaim that "the Republicans are a queer set of fellows--they like the black people (a great ways off) and have great sympathy for human freedom, but never go beyond mere professions."

This context helps understand the front-page political cartoon, in which a top-hatted protector of the state capitol turns a fire hose upon fleeing Republicans, one of them proclaiming "A nigger is as good as a white man, and better than a d---d furiner." A vivid example, should we need one, of racism in the north leading up to the Civil War.
