Additional Details

This class portrait of the president's son Robert Todd Lincoln is rarely seen, although other images of him from this period survive. We find it reproduced in the 1904 publication "Portraits, Harvard College Class of 1864." Also seen there is the portrait on verso of this leaf: classmate Channing Lilly, who preceded Lincoln in the alphabet.

After graduation, Robert Todd Lincoln briefly attended law school, then spent the last few months of the Civil War as an adjutant of General Grant's staff. His career in public service later included appointments as Secretary of War, and Minister to the United Kingdom.
