Additional Details

On 17 April 1865, two days after news of the assassination, the Pittsburgh suburb of Manchester held a mass meeting to mourn their loss. According to the Pittsburgh Courier of 21 April, "An ode composed by Samuel Mills of Allegheny on the death of President Lincoln was sung by a choir of ladies and gentlemen under the leadership of Prof. Carter, with fine effect." Offered here is the ode, which appears to be otherwise unpublished. "Friends of the true and brave! Of the down-trodden slave! Now lifeless in the grave! Columbia Mourn!" We can find no other works by Samuel Mills, and very few other items printed by Walker & Seibert of Pittsburgh; no other copies of this ephemeral slip have been traced.
