TOMI UNGERER. Group of 5 Illustrations. Proposed advertisements created for the Albert Frank Guenther Law advertising agency's Citibank ad campaign, circa 1963-64. Three are pen-and-ink on white paper. 279x222 mm; 11x8 3/4 inches, sheets. Initialed. Two are pen, watercolor, and collage on brown craft paper. 242x190 mm; 9 1/2x7 1/2 inches, sight size. Signed in ink, lower right. Provenance: Tomi Ungerer to current owner, artist/illustrator Thomas Yacovella.
Charming illustrations from Ungerer's early career, when he worked for the Albert Frank Guenther Law advertising agency in New York City. Yacovella was the Art Director of the agency at the time. The three drawings are of a man with a worried expression; in one he appears with one end of a rope tied around his neck, the other to a femur bone twice his height. The two collage pieces feature a toucan with all the South American country names mounted onto its wing feathers, the other shows two kites and Mt. Fuji bearing the printed city names Nagoya, Yokohama, and Tokyo.
