Additional Details

Cleland (1880-1964) was a self-taught book designer and publisher who launched his career at 16 out of his basement. At age 20, he moved to Boston and honed his skills under the imprint Cornhill Press and was mentored by D.B. Updike of Merrymount Press. Cleland eventually went on to work for McClure's magazine, the Locomobile Company of America, the Westvaco Corporation, the Cadillac Motor Car Company, and Fortune Magazine. Throughout his career, he continued to illustrate the fine press editions for which he is most remembered today.
