Additional Details

One image depicts top-hatted men enjoying a smoke at the circus with the hand-penciled caption "The Barnum circus which came to Richmond was hardly more wonderful to me than the Virginia cigarettes to which John Colfax gave me my introduction." Dated April 25, 1916. The other, uncaptioned, shows a trio of men stopping for a smoke while ice skating on a pond. Dated July 18, 1916. L&M advertised heavily that year as their top-selling cigarette, Chesterfield, debuted a moisture-proof cover, enabling them to be carried outdoors.
