(ADVERTISING / TOBACCO.) HERB ROTH. Liggett & Myers Tobacco. Together, two advertisements published in Metropolitan Magazine and elsewhere, produced by advertising agency Frank Seaman, Inc., New York, 1916. Pen and ink on stiff paper. Both images are oval and measure roughly 235x407 mm; 9 1/4x16 inches on 14x21-inch sheets. Signed in lower right image; editors' notes and job stamps in margins and on versos.
One image depicts top-hatted men enjoying a smoke at the circus with the hand-penciled caption "The Barnum circus which came to Richmond was hardly more wonderful to me than the Virginia cigarettes to which John Colfax gave me my introduction." Dated April 25, 1916. The other, uncaptioned, shows a trio of men stopping for a smoke while ice skating on a pond. Dated July 18, 1916. L&M advertised heavily that year as their top-selling cigarette, Chesterfield, debuted a moisture-proof cover, enabling them to be carried outdoors.
