Additional Details

first edition of a very unusual narrative by the son of an african king. Besolow relates an incident after his return from school in the United States. He had gone to visit a mentor, Mrs. Roberts, the first lady of Liberia, who told him 'The white man's god is all very well, but it is the Black man's God who under stands the black man's needs and wants.' He reiterates all of this in his introduction, in reverse, where he is accused of making excuses for the young country.
