Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832-1912), born in Saint Thomas, V.I. is credited with being one of the earliest pan-Africanists. Blyden felt that African-descended Americans and others, suffering under the yoke of slavery and prejudice in the United States and elsewhere, could and should play a part in the development of Africa.
