Additional Details

Francis Burns (1809-1863) was raised in poverty near Albany, NY, and became a Methodist minister. He made his first missionary trip to Liberia in 1834, and spent most of the remainder of his life there, being appointed bishop in 1858. This engraving was issued as an illustration for a feature article on Burns in the March 1859 issue of the Ladies' Repository, pages 129-132.
