Additional Details

Kenneth Macaulay (1792-1829), at the age of 16, was sent from England to the British colony of Sierra Leone which had been established for freed slaves. He held numerous positions in the government, later serving as acting governor. In this document, he acknowledges receipt of public funds: "Received from the public accountant the sum of five hundred pounds on account of capt'd negroes, for which I have signed triplicate receipts of which this is the second." This may refer to slaves freed under the prosecution of Samuel Samo, the first man tried under the British Slave Trade Felony Act of 1811. Samo's trial continued through June 1812.
