George Schuyler, then correspondent for the Pittsburgh Courier traveled to Liberia where he researched this book on the shocking conditions in the Black republic. Liberia, founded as a refuge for ex-slaves, had descended into open slavery under a government so corrupt that the League of Nations had ordered a special investigation of the officials there.
