Additional Details

first edition. scarce. Edward Wilmot Blyden (1832-1912), scholar, writer, diplomat and politician, was born to Igbo, Nigerian slave parents in the Virgin Islands. Blyden's early education was guided by Reverend John P. Knox, a local minister. At 18, Blyden traveled to the U.S. to attend Rutgers. However, when they saw him, he was refused entry--and twice again at two other institutions. Blyden instead traveled to Liberia, where he completed his studies and married. He is considered one of the earliest advocates of Pan-Africanism.
