Quilimane was an important trading center for the Portuguese from the 16th-19th centuries because of its proximity to the Zambezi River. It was only in the mid-19th century that any other nation was allowed to trade from the town. Because of its ideal location, it was one of the most important slave trading centers in East Africa. It was also the starting point for David Livingstone's famous expedition up the Zambezi to Lake Nyasa in 1868.
