A rare image of African-American farm workers who are shown on the plantation of James Hopkinson. This photograph was taken after Hopkinson and other plantation owners had left Edisto Island following its capture by Union forces. Although technically still slaves, the African-Americans pictured here had possession of the property after it was abandoned by its southern owners.<
