Silver print, the image measuring 8x5 inches (20.3x12.7 cm.), the mount 11x8 inches (27.9x20.3 cm.), with the Tuskegee Institute Photographic Division blind stamp with Battey's credit on print recto, descriptive notations, in pencil, on mount recto, and a Culver Pictures hand stamp and descriptive label, in pencil, on mount verso. Additional Details

Cornelius M. Battey was an accomplished photographer well-known for his portraits of prominent black Americans. His work appeared in Civil Rights publications of the era, including "The Crisis," "The Messenger," and "Oppottunity," beginning in the 1910s, and circulated widely on postcards. In 1916 he founded and became director of the Photography Division at the Tuskegee Institute.
