The 5th Regiment, United States Colored Heavy Artillery was formed in 1864 from members of the 1st Mississippi Heavy Artillery (African Descent). It served mostly in garrison duty in Vicksburg until being mustered out in May 1866. This file was kept by the company's captain Daniel F. Nichols of Massachusetts.
