All issues are copiously illustrated. The 5 January 1889 issue features a cover illustration of editor Edwin F. Horn (grandfather of Lena Horne) and "The Literary Colored Women of America" on the back page. The 16 February 1889 issue features U.S. Representative Henry P. Cheatham. The 27 July 1889 issue includes an impressive half-page portrait of the Rev. Thomas L. Johnson, a former slave who went to Africa as a missionary.
