Important group of 27 early southern stereo views of African-American slaves and "colored freemen," principally in North and South Carolina and Georgia, by various photographers. The lot includes an exterior view of Rufus Morgan's photographic studio in Charlotte, N. C., a rich occupational portrait of chimney sweeps by J. N. Wilson of Savannah, workers posing by a cotton press in Aiken, S. C. by J. A. Palmer, a view of students and family members before Howard University, and 23 other images. Albumen prints, each on flat mounts with the photographer's printed or handwritten caption and/or credit on mount recto or verso. 1860s-70s
