(AFRICAN AMERICANS.) Muster roll for Company K of the 24th Infantry Regiment--one of the four "Buffalo Soldier" regiments. Printed form completed in manuscript with the names of two officers and 57 enlisted men, 20 1/2 x 32 inches, signed by Captain James N. Morgan and several enlisted men, the remainder signing by mark; minor wear. Ringgold Barracks, TX, 31 December 1873

Additional Details

For each soldier, this muster roll shows his enlistment date and place, detailed pay information, and signature or mark. Comments are also noted for many of the soldiers; one is "on arrest awaiting trial," another is noted as a deserter, but many are receiving supplementary pay for doing extra duty. John W. Williams is noted as being "on daily duty as company clerk." He signed without a mark, and apparently signed for all of his illiterate fellow soldiers as well, in the same neat handwriting.
This regiment was under the command of Colonel Abner Doubleday, best known as the inventor of baseball (although he wasn't). His name is noted in the header of the muster roll.
