The text of a letter addressed "To the friends of liberty and religion in the city of Philadelphia," signed in type by Absalom Jones and 8 other leaders of the city's African American community, seeking funds to launch their own congregation. This project met with success the following year with the founding of the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, the nation's first black Episcopal church.
