Charles Neal, an African American, was accused of murdering a white woman in Marianna, FL. He was arrested and brought to Alabama for his own safety, but a mob arrived to bring him back to Marianna. His lynching was advertised in the local press with twelve hours' notice, but state authorities did not come to the prisoner's aid. He was tortured and mutilated before being hung.
