Rear-Admiral Burney participated in the Captain Cook's last two voyages. His first-hand account of Cook's explorations in Alaska and Hawaii appears on pages 202-270. The remainder of the volume compiles numerous Russian, English, Dutch and Danish voyages to Alaska and the northern Russian coast. The volume is apparently inscribed to Charles Chamier Raper (1777-1842), a War Office clerk who was married to Burney's niece Frances.
