Railroad mogul Edward Harriman funded and led this 1899 scientific expedition along the Alaskan coast, accompanied by a boatload of notable scientists, authors, and artists. The first two volumes are known for their fine photogravure plates, including 45 after photographs by Edward S. Curtis. Volume I was written by John Burroughs, John Muir, and George Bird Grinnell.
