Grant, Charles Dickens, Napoleon, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., Victor Hugo, James A. Garfield, Henry James, Booker T. Washington, and others. 4to, later buckram, gilt-lettered spine; some clipped Signatures or letters are mounted or secured inexpertly with cello tape, all edges gilt, fine hand-painted title-page. Begins with approximately 80 Signatures from Reconstruction congressmen and Civil War heroes written three to a page, most with state or rank, including U.S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Schuyler Colfax, J.A. Dahlgren, Simon Cameron, and others. The remainder are mostly letters laid or tipped in, some addressed to General Opdycke:
William T. Sherman. ALS, to Gen. Opdycke, responding to his request for advice about the location of a proposed cattle ranch, suggesting that "[s]ome parts of eastern Montana [are] good but market distant and Indians lively." 2 pages, 8vo. Washington, 9 July 1878 Edith Wharton. Two ALsS. The first, to Mr. Bell, concerning a letter she wrote to [young] Mr. Opdycke and matters relating to the S.P.C.A. 4 pages, 8vo. "Curtis Hotel," "Thursday" [circa 1906]. The second, to [young] Mr. Opdycke, thanking him for his praise of "the last pages of my book" and for his efforts on behalf of the S.P.C.A. 2 pages, 16mo. [New York], 8 February [circa 1906] Henry James. Two ALsS, to [young] Mr. Opdycke. The first, responding to his appeal for a recommendation to a conservatory in Paris and stating that "I am fond of the theatre, but I am not fond of actors . . . & I won't make any attempt to know them." 8 pages, small 8vo. "3 Bolton St. W.," 20 Nov[ember 1885?]. The second, arranging to meet in Paris after a visit from his brother William. With an apology for having mistakenly written, and struck out, the name of his publisher ("Osgood") in the salutation. 4 pages, small 8vo. [England], 30 Aug[ust] no year James A. Garfield. ALS, to [then] Colonel [Emerson Opdycke], expressing delight at the prospect of having his regiment with him, and stating that "[t]he Burnside disaster [Battle of Fredericksberg?] is recoiling in the Country with fearful effect. . . . this world of Washington is in such a ferment as has not been seen for many a long day. . . ." 2 pages, 4to; fading to text and signature.
