Additional Details

Folky allegorical portrayals of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America as female figures each seated with an associated animal ornamenting the corner spandrels of the clock dial. Atop the plate is a larger feminine figure symbolizing revolutionary freedom with a display of the Phyrgian cap on a pike and cast-off chains at her feet; behind her a small bird escapes to the skies from a flung-open cage, another small symbol of independence.
