Portrait of Banneker on the front cover; 34 of 36 unnumbered pages, lacking the last leaf; several jottings, a note in red ink on the cover: "presented by Mr. Geo. Archer;" inked library stamp from an old historical society; all four corners trimmed, a sign of early "remaindering." Enclosed in a home-made very early 19th century card-stock case with red dye "blotting" and a round label, with "Bannaker's Almanac 1795." Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), self-taught astronomer, mathematician, surveyor, and author helped lay out the survey for Washington Territory that was to become the grid for Washington D. C.
