Additional Details

Asquannat, a woman of about 70 years, recalls a family of Wampanoags she knew in her youth in Tisbury, including the sachem Wanamanhut, his three wives, his two sons, and several grandchildren. On the younger son John, "I have understood his father always slighted him as being born of a woman not noble and I have seen the sd Nanahit and John and there seemed to be a considerable differance in their age, John looking younger than the other." This interesting inheritance case and this testimony in particular were cited in Silverman's 2005 study "Faith and Boundaries: Colonists, Christianity, and Community among the Wampanoag Indians of Martha's Vineyard."
