Captioned in manuscript on verso: "Three chiefs who remained loyal during the rebellion. Picture taken when they were on a mission tour in Ontario with Rev. John McDougall. Jonas, Samson, Pakan." Other copies of this portrait and related images are held at the United Church of Canada archives and the Glenbow Museum. They identify these men as Jonas Goodstoney of the Stoney or Nakoda tribe; Samson of the Cree; and Chief Pakan (also known as James Seenum) of the Cree.
