(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Buckrom, Abraham. An English Quaker discusses translating George Fox into Indian languages. Autograph Letter Signed to Gilbert Heathcote. 2 pages on one sheet, 13 x 8 inches; separations at folds, with crude early repairs. [England], 6 November 1704

Additional Details

In a long personal letter from one English Quaker to another, Buckrom concludes: "I wish our Friends would get George Foxe's will translated into ye Algonekin language if possible, for it would be good use to ye Iroquests & Huons and further their conversation, and might bring in some others of these barbarous nations." Although a French-Huron dictionary and a few Huron tracts had been published by this point, nothing had yet appeared in Iroquois; neither language is now considered to be in the Algonquian family. This early translation project apparently never reached fruition.
