Additional Details

In 1872, Nantaje (or Nantahe) helped guide the United States Cavalry to an Arizona cave which served as a hideout for a band of Yavapai. During the battle, 76 of the Yavapai were killed. Nantaje also won praise for rescuing a Yavapai boy who had been caught in the crossfire. He and his fellow scouts were awarded the Medal of Honor three years later. He is here posed with a rifle, revolver, and hunting knife.
