Additional Details

The Treaty of Payne's Landing was a rather dubious document signed on 9 May 1832 which allegedly authorized the removal of the Seminoles from Florida to an undetermined tract of land west of the Mississippi. Here, a few weeks later, the territorial governor of Florida recommends his friend to the War Department "to accompany the immigrant Indians of Florida, or the exploring party, which it is supposed will be sent under the provisions of the late treaty." The doctor did not need to pack his bags that week. Bitter resistance to the treaty terms over the coming years was the main cause of the Second Seminole War.
