An article on the 1898 Omaha Transmississippi Exposition (when this photo was taken) recounts that "Little Hattie Tom, a Chiricahua Apache maiden, was the prettiest girl in the village. Boni Tela, a young San Carlos Apache brave, fell desperately in love with her. The affair terminated in disappointment to both, owing to the obstinacy with which they clung to their respective tribes."
