Henry Stephens, New York State Assemblyman. Letter to United States Senator Charles E. Dudley. Argues against the formal recognition of Indian sovereignty in treaties: "It has been urged that the United States have recognized the independence of the Indian tribes by negotiating with them. . . . I cannot understand how people interspersed through a whole government can be treated as independent of that government. They must necessarily be dependent upon the states in which they live, and all that we can do for them . . . is to recommend them to the kindness of that government." Albany, NY, 11 March 1830 D.C. Judson of Ogdensburg Bank. Letter to Amaziah Flagg, promising to provide $2398 "to the agent for paying the St. Regis Indians." Ogdensburg, NY, 19 June 1834 Salmon Case, agent to the Oneida Indians. Two letters to Bates Cooke, informing that the Oneidas want the full principal in addition to the interest on their annuity, in accordance with "several persons who are friendly to the Indians and wish to protect their property against the cupidity of the surrounding whites." Vernon, NY, 25 June and 30 September 1839 Christ John Buchtree. Letter to the Comptroller of New York, requesting that the funds for the "Christian Party of Oneida Indians" be sent to Oneida rather than Green Bay. Oneida Castle, NY, 8 June 1849 Robert H. Shankland. Letter to John W. Hart regarding payments to New York Indians relocating to Neosho, MO. Ellicottville, NY, 16 July 1849.
