(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Jefferson, Thomas. Message from the President . . . Communicating Letters from Governor Hull, Respecting the Indians in the Vicinity of Detroit, Residing within our Lines. 11 pages. 8vo, disbound. Washington, 1807

Additional Details

Includes the text of a remarkable speech delivered by William Hull to the Pottawatamie and Chippewa leaders. As hostilities with the English neared, the Americans were anxious to keep the peace with the Indians. Hull's message begins by addressing "My children," and continues "Your father, the president of the United States, desires to recall to your minds the paternal policy of the United States. . . . If ever we are constrained to lift the hatchet against any tribe, we will never lay it down till that tribe is exterminated, or driven beyond the Mississippi. . . . Let them then continue quiet at home, take care of their women and children." The chiefs' deferential responses to their "father" are included. No previous copies noted at auction.
