Additional Details

The Miami Indians had been relocated from Indiana to the western territories in several waves of forced removals. Under an 1854 treaty, the federal government then reduced the size of the Miami reservation in Kansas to accommodate an influx of white settlers. In return, individual members received annuities and land allotments, such as the 200 acres received here by one tribal member.
