first edition, with first-state title page. McKenney compiled this set after serving as the United States Superintendent of Indian Affairs through 1830. It is most famous for its lithographs after the work of Charles Bird King, who was commissioned to paint portraits of American Indian delegates visiting Washington from 1821 to 1830. "The most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed"--Howes M129.
The work was initially issued in 20 parts, with parts 9 through 16 intended to be bound in the second volume; this volume contains only parts 9 through 13, with only 11 of the 30 plates issued in those parts (plate list and collation notes available upon request).
