(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Petition of the Penobscots to the Governor of Maine. 2 manuscript pages on one sheet, 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches; minor wear. Old Town, ME, 16 August 1839

Additional Details

Members of the Penobscots protest a recent tribal vote which they allege has been rigged by the Indian agent, who spent tribal funds to bring in illegal voters from New York and Boston as well as "strangers having no claims whatever." The defeated measure "would have promoted the interest of the tribe, and secured one long step on the road to improvement." The petition is signed with the marks (possibly secretarial) of chief Tomer Sockalexis and eight others.
